I’m Ryan Stover – A Colorado native, artist and lifelong communicator of life’s beauty.

My art is a visual expression of letting go. I love to paint with watercolor in a style that is flowing, dynamic and uninhibited. A reckless act of self expression forever frozen in time.

Each painting contains only high quality pigments on the finest watercolor papers.

I hope you enjoy experiencing them as much as I enjoyed the reckless act of bringing it into existence.

When I was younger, I tried to make everything perfect. I’d draw and erase the same line ten times before I’d commit to it with black ink it. Now the fun is embracing imperfection and welcoming what is.

The raw act of covering a canvas in vibrant watercolor paint is both an act of self expression and self discovery… With my best work, I’m thinking “where is my resistance? What’s holding me back from making the next bold, expressive commitment?” When I find resistance, I welcome it, flowing with and through it. I usually paint two or three watercolor paintings all at once… flowing between them in a kind of dance so that I can stay engaged in the creative act without needing to wait for areas of canvas to dry. If I’m ever unsure of the the next stroke, I will turn my attention to the next painting… and the next right move always presents itself this way.

After the watercolors dry I finally let my analytical mind indulge itself. I enjoy how it gets lost in what the paint has done. I use “super black” India ink and smaller, Chinese style brushes to accentuate the patterns and forms hiding in the expressive swirls of color.

I’ll discover trees and plants and rocks… layers of underground soil, water and swirling clouds in the sky… as well as the many strange self-forming creatures populating the dreamlike landscapes that crystalize from the collective memories of 40 years of adventuring through natural environments as a colorado native, trained geologist… and fearless psychedelic psychonaut.

I know a painting is “done” the moment I sense the question forming. It’s a feeling, not a thought. I stand back and marvel: “There it is.”

After a wild, flowing painting session I’ll be completely spent… artgasm. It can take several days to recover so I go back into the world to “fill the well” with joy and abundance, growing my excitement for the next studio session.

If you resonate with my style, get in touch! I have noticed that there are certain people who “get” the work I do on a deeper level… and those individuals end up being friends and collaborators. If that’s you, well, I can’t wait to see what we manifest together.
